The world's tallest hotel opened last November. It replaced the world's tallest hotel. Ciel rises 377 metres over Dubai Marina — 82 floors, 1,004 rooms, an infinity pool 76 storeys up. The record it broke belonged to the Gevora, on Sheikh Zayed Road. Same city. Same skyline. Same decade. Dubai stopped competing with other cities a long time ago. It competes with itself.

Just glass, and the track running out ahead of you. That carriage is Gold Class. Double the fare, and the fare is small. It runs past the Burj Khalifa, the Museum of the Future, the Marina. The best view in the city isn't sold as a view at all.

The Arabic calligraphy wrapping the façade is the window system, cut through 1,024 stainless steel panels, each one shaped by robots. 1,024 isn't an arbitrary number. It's one kilobyte. Inside, a steel diagrid carries the whole torus, so the floors stay completely clear. A building that spells out what it believes — in the language it believes it in.
