Eurostar’s long-standing grip on the Paris–London rail route is edging closer to serious competition. Italy’s Trenitalia has ordered 10 new Frecciarossa trains specifically for a planned Channel Tunnel service from 2029, with ambitions to run 10 daily return journeys between the French and British capitals. The trains are part of a €2 billion order from Hitachi Rail, while an €80 million facility near Paris is expected to provide the storage and maintenance base after Trenitalia failed to secure access to Britain’s Temple Mills depot. If the plan stays on track, crossing the Channel by train may finally come with more than one name on the departure board.
