Brexit paperwork is becoming a fresh headache for some Britons living in France, with residence-card renewals reportedly taking as long as six months. Thousands of five-year cards issued in 2020 and 2021 are now expiring, and while most renewals appear to proceed normally, growing backlogs at some French prefectures are leaving applicants without updated documents and complicating travel, work and everyday administration. Britons who lived in France before Brexit and remain there have permanent residence rights under the Withdrawal Agreement, so an expired card does not automatically remove their status - but proving it without valid paperwork can be far less straightforward. Brexit may be years behind them, but for some residents, the queue at the prefecture is keeping it very much alive.
