Putting a puppy or kitten in a shop window could now become an expensive mistake in France. Pet shops that illegally sell or give away dogs and cats face fines of up to €1,500 per animal, rising to €3,000 for repeat offences, while displaying live animals where they can be seen from the street can cost up to €750 per animal. The bans themselves are not new, but the penalties introduced this month are designed to discourage impulse pet purchases and reduce irresponsible ownership. Adoption events with animal welfare groups remain allowed - because choosing a pet should involve more thought than spotting one through a window.
