Breastfeeding in public is legal in France-but many mothers say that doesn't stop the harassment. A petition calling for a law that would specifically protect breastfeeding women from public discrimination has gathered more than 22,000 signatures, with campaigners arguing that hostile comments, stares and even physical confrontations remain common. While French labor law gives working mothers time to breastfeed, activists say there is still no clear legal protection against harassment in public spaces after a similar bill stalled in 2021. Sometimes changing the law is only half the challenge-the harder part is changing people's attitudes.
