Artificial intelligence could soon become one of the first lifeguards to spot a swimmer in trouble. France is testing AI-powered rescue drones that use thermal cameras and computer vision to detect the early signs of drowning, warn nearby swimmers and automatically drop inflatable life rings while lifeguards race to the scene. The trials are taking place at Valras-Plage in southern France, with developers aiming for full regulatory approval and wider deployment by summer 2027. Sometimes the fastest rescue begins not with a whistle, but with an algorithm.
