Heatwaves are changing who ends up in French hospitals, with doctors reporting a growing number of young patients arriving with serious breathing problems despite having no previous respiratory conditions. Pulmonologists warn that prolonged extreme heat can narrow the airways, weaken the immune system and sharply increase the risk of lung infections, while air pollution and wildfire smoke make the threat even worse. Researchers say greener cities with more trees and open spaces appear to offer better protection than densely built urban areas. As heatwaves become more frequent, clean air may be turning into one of the most important forms of healthcare.
