Crystal-clear mountain water isn't always as pure as it looks. Nine hikers in the French Pyrenees were airlifted to Tarbes Hospital after drinking untreated water from streams and lakes, despite using filter bottles, suffering nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. French authorities warn that mountain water may contain harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites, advising hikers to carry enough drinking water and, if no safe source is available, boil untreated water for at least one minute-or three minutes above 2,000 metres-before drinking it. In France's mountains, the clearest stream can sometimes be the most deceptive.
