From March 28 to April 16 2026, the world’s chess elite will gather on the west coast of Cyprus for one of the most prestigious events in the global chess calendar. The FIDE Candidates Tournament and the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament will take place side by side at Cap St Georges Hotel and Resort, with a total prize fund of €1 million. As a partner of the Tournament, Freedom24 is proud to support chess at the highest level, reinforcing its commitment to strategic thinking, global community building, and sporting excellence. ♟
This is the final step on the road to the World Championship and the largest chess event ever held in Cyprus. Each double round-robin tournament will feature eight players who qualified according to FIDE selection criteria. The winners will earn the right to challenge the reigning world champions, Gukesh Dommaraju and Ju Wenjun.
“Cyprus offers an inspiring blend of culture, history and hospitality,” said Evgenii Tiapkin, Executive Director of Freedom24. “As the host of multiple prestigious FIDE events, the island has shown itself to be a welcoming and fitting stage for top-level chess. We are honoured to contribute to the new chapter in chess history and are dedicated to delivering an exceptional experience for players, fans, and the global chess community.” 🏆
FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky highlighted the significance of the event for the island: “It is another major project FIDE stages in cooperation with Freedom. We are proud about our lasting partnership - which includes both top professional events, and also a whole string of educational and social programmes around the World. The strategical thinking and the drive to make an entire society better aligns FIDE and Freedom, and the Candidates-2026 is another testimony to this joint vision” he said.
