Capital, a French economics and business news platform, has published a market commentary featuring Thomas Jaquet, director of Freedom24 France, who examines the recent downturn in Rheinmetall’s share price and the factors driving investor caution. This update is important for anyone following the European defense sector, which has seen sharp movements amid shifting geopolitical expectations. In the article, Thomas notes that recent momentum reveals several weaknesses that investors must take into account. He mentions the current geopolitical situation, where "the peace factor is already a factor," and explains that expectations around de-escalation have weighed heavily on defense stocks. Thomas also points to valuation concerns, noting that Rheinmetall shares "are trading at 76 to 77 times estimated earnings (over 12 months), compared to around 31 for the sector. This is an unusual valuation for an industrial company, even one experiencing strong growth." 📊 He adds that growth now depends primarily on European programs, which remain tied to political cycles and ESG constraints. In the short term, Thomas warns that the risk of a downward correction remains high for Rheinmetall shares, even as the company maintains strong fundamentals supported by a large order book and solid revenue growth with clear visibility for the coming years. From a technical perspective, “a break below €1,430 would open the way to a pullback towards €900 to €1,000. To regain upward momentum, the share price would need to climb sustainably above €1,750-€1,800, then break through €2,000,” the expert believes. Looking ahead, Thomas notes that the market is reassessing short term risks while keeping long term drivers in view. As he explains, “A swift peace and a reduction in European budgets could trigger a further contraction of multiples. But the market still considers the NATO rearmament cycle to be a long-term commitment. Rheinmetall is thus going through a recalibration phase: high short-term risk, but intact structural potential. Rheinmetall shares appear to be an opportunity for gradual entry rather than aggressive buying.” 🇪🇺 🔗 Read more on Capital
