Sahara Desert - The Largest Hot Desert in the World
The Sahara is the largest desert in Northern Africa, stretching 4,800 kilometers from west to east and 800-1,200 kilometers from north to south. Its area is approximately 8.6 million square kilometers, which is roughly 30% of Africa's total area.
The Sahara's climate is unique and influenced by its geographical location. The desert lies within high-altitude anticyclones, where air descends and creates dry trade winds in the northern hemisphere. This results in very rare rainfall, with hot and dry air dominating the region.
