Happy to share that our paper “CAD2TechSpec: a framework for automating design processes within computer-aided design systems” has been published in PeerJ Computer Science! 🥳
We introduce CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D CAD models into structured, readable JSON machining specifications.
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first end-to-end framework to generate ISO-aware machining specifications directly from 3D CAD models using multimodal VLMs and RAG – our paper’s key novelty.
The approach combines multi-view CAD rendering, informative view selection, multimodal VLM, and RAG. RAG grounds the process plans in a curated knowledge base of manufacturing equipment, tooling, and relevant ISO standards.
We evaluate the framework on a subset of the ABC dataset, focusing on JSON validity, process correctness, and ISO relevance. Our results show that integrating ISO-grounded retrieval improves the quality and consistency of the generated machining specifications. Human expert evaluation further confirms the value of retrieval augmentation for producing more reliable, standards-aware process plans.
