Κινέτα by Yorgos Lanthimos Nada. Zilch. Empty void. Kinetta, the directorial debut of Yorgos Lanthimos, is just that. Unlike Dogtooth or Alps, which started as puzzles - lots of words and actions that didn’t mean much at first, but later, like pieces falling into place, formed a beautiful picture, similar to Simeon ten Holt’s music, complex melody emerging from a collection of random tads and bits - here, nothing. It never comes together. Oh well.
I Saw the TV Glow by Jane Schoenbrun A modern creepy coming of age story, of never letting go of your childhood monsters and bedtime fears, a light version of body horror acceptable for Netflix, with non-binary and transgender allusions all the way. But above all, just a cool creepy film to watch alone at night.
La Bête by Bertrand Bonello Something in between Marcel Proust’s À la recherche du temps perdu, a Victorian novel, and William Gibson’s cyberpunk tale from the 90s, The Beast is very, very slow at first, but it gains more and more as it goes. Punchy. The role is not as memorable as France or La Vie d’Adèle, but Léa Seydoux sure rocks my cinema world (and I couldn’t care less about 007 films or Dune, eh).
The Long Goodbye by Robert Altman Watching it for the second time, and for the second time I ain’t much impressed. Not a hell of Philip Marlowe, if you ask me - though it ain’t Elliott Gould’s fault, it’s Altman’s. PS: … but it is sure better than Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning. Box office of $600M, and the movie is totally fake and unwatchable, just a bowl of very old reheated cabbage.

Blow Out by Brian De Palma A classic fast-paced De Palma neo-noir thriller from 1981, already not devoid of his signature Italian giallo-inspired POV killing scenes, and very much in style of Alfred Hitchcock. John Travolta and Nancy Allen make a great cast. Pure joy.

Alpha by Julia Ducournau Third Julia Ducounau’s movie is quite intense. Think of Larry Clark’s Kids reimagined for the 21st century, a new sweeping blood-borne AIDS-like virus spreading like the wind, from gay bars and dirty needles to public schools. The red wind rises. Less brutal and less insane than Titane, Ducounau’s Cannes triumph, yet very beautifully made, for those who ain’t afraid of arthouse body horror. The best of its kind. Ducourau’s debut film Raw is surely on my watchlist. PS: … and I disagree with referencing David Cronenberg in connection with Ducounau’s films. Sure, a part of the form - deformities and flesh wounds - is similar, but it’s just the form - the vibe is totally different, much less pensive and surreal, more intense and brutal.
Reality by Tina Satter A beautifully executed short movie… I wish there were more shorter movies overall, scared when it’s 2h or more. Originally a theatre play based on an FBI interview with an NSA leaker during Russiagate, it converted to the silver screen quite nicely. The only question remains - Sydney Sweeney is a true living icon for American conservatives, so her playing (and very masterfully) one of the most well-known liberal whistleblowers of the past two decades is a very interesting choice of roles. Must be a long and winding road to becoming the reigning Star-Spangled Banner superstar.
