Weapons by Zach Cregger Insane. Totally blood-chilling. Likely one of the best horror movies of the decade. A dark, modern Baba Yaga — a Grimm Brothers’ 21st-century edition fairy tale — that kicks serious ass.
One Battle After Another by Paul Thomas Anderson Pulsating, full of raw energy, a movie of chases and runs, of conspiracies and crazies… yet, am I the only one who sees Paul Thomas Anderson as an Antifa sympathizer now? He sure does come forward with a carefully elaborated, almost corporate, far-right KKK racist movement, his very own invented brand of institutional racism — all that to portray the far-left Antifa violence as necessary? Saddens me.
Broken Rage by Takeshi Kitano Beat Takeshi has grown immensely tired. Unlike Clint Eastwood’s cinema - where you can actually enjoy him aging through the film camera - Kitano’s recent films feel like a pale shadow, an echo of days past. Perhaps the most beautiful thing about it is brevity: one hour was more than enough.
Witness by Peter Weir Before Dead Poets Society, Peter Weir directed this romantic crime thriller about the Amish, with Kelly McGillis, in her pre-Top Gun quiet grace, offering a timid smile every now and then. A lovely and deeply endearing one.
The Brutalist by Brady Corbet Bravo! Likely one of the best films I’ve seen in a while, a grand piece of period cinema, and like a gulp of fresh air, this movie offers a token of support for Israel in our crazy antisemitic times. What I was sad about, truly sad about, is how they ridiculed, totally diminished Harrison Van Buren from a great totally Ayn Randian entrepreneur to … oh, well, no spoilers. My 8yo loves ranking stuff on 10/10 scale, and this one definitely 9.5 or above.
Species by Roger Donaldson A nice piece of science fiction junk from early 90s, a tad more brutal than its tone suggested, and it felt totally like the 80s, music and the vibe.
The Order by Justin Kurzel Dark, brooding, a beautifully made movie about a radical terror group l hunted down by the FBI, and Jude Law does an awesome job. But when the director suddenly links those crazy racist nazi terrorists from ‘84 to all of Jan 6 rioters, in a postscriptum of sort, makes one cringe, eh.
Child’s Play by Tom Holland Remains remarkably current and fresh. By all accounts, it’s far above my expectations — the last time I watched it I was probably about twelve, so I’m surprised I liked it then and still like it now. Often disturbing — a great quality for a horror flick.
