Competency is, of course, the big problem the right faces as a whole today. Decades of surrender--especially allowing leftists to colonise and then totally control the universities and prestige institutions of society--mean it's pretty slim pickings at this very late hour. Often, it's a choice between more or less incompetent options. It's not irrational, however unsatisfying it may be, to choose the less incompetent option.
