Freedom Holding Corp. CEO Timur Turlov sat down with the Cyprus Mail on the sidelines of the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournaments opening ceremony in Paphos to discuss the company's strategy, the role of technology in shaping modern finance and Cyprus's growing role in the tech and finance landscape. In a wide-ranging conversation, Turlov touched on everything from AI and digital infrastructure to the value of chess as a tool for strategic thinking. "In the world we live in today, the ability to think strategically and anticipate the next move is becoming essential," he said. "Chess trains exactly that skill, and it is something we need much more of now." During the interview, Timur introduced a brand-new initiative: "We are launching a media-first think tank called Tech Forward Cyprus," he said. "Its purpose is to promote the country's technological advancements globally." He highlighted a gap he wants to close: "Many great products are being developed in Cyprus, but people do not know about them. We want to tell that story to the world." The initiative, organised by Freedom24's communications desk, is designed to put Cyprus on the map for institutional investors, retail investors and policymakers alike. "Sometimes the story comes before the infrastructure," Turlov said. "If people understand the opportunity, capital will follow." 🌍 On the broader development of Freedom Holding Corp., Turlov reflected on how the company grew from a brokerage into a fully integrated digital ecosystem. "In our super app, you can open a bank account, access loans, buy insurance, trade securities, order food, book travel and even connect to home internet," he said. "It is a one-stop shop for almost everything." He expressed confidence in the potential for a similar approach in Cyprus: "I believe Cyprus has huge potential, but it requires strong cooperation, leadership and resources. With a broader presence, including banking and other services, we could build something similar here that makes life easier for citizens and businesses." 💡 🔗 Read the full interview on Cyprus Mail

The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 officially opened on March 28 at the Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort on the west coast of Cyprus. Sixteen grandmasters, eight men and eight women, were introduced on stage during an open-air ceremony. The total prize fund stands at one million euros, and this is the culminating step on the road to the match for the world champion title. Nothing of this scale has ever been held in the history of chess in Cyprus, and the first of 14 rounds has already been played. 🇨🇾 Timur Turlov, founder and CEO of Freedom Holding Corp., shared his perspective on what the tournament brings to the island: "What will the Candidates Tournament offer the people of Cyprus? It's a chance to see a potential world champion. This is an opportunity to connect with chess legends who have never gathered in Cyprus in such numbers before. Fortunately, Cyprus is very calm and safe, hosting some very exciting and successful tournaments." Cyprus Tourism Minister Costas Koumis conveyed congratulations from President Nikos Christodoulides, calling the hosting of two prestigious events a great honor for the country and emphasizing Cyprus's growing reputation as a destination for high-level sporting competitions. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich expressed gratitude to the government of the Republic of Cyprus, local authorities, and the tournament partners, including Freedom Holding Corp., the Scheinberg family, and Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort, for making the competition possible and providing optimal conditions for the players. As a partner of the tournament, Freedom24 reinforces its commitment to strategic thinking, global community building, and sporting excellence at the highest level. The first round delivered sharp contrasts between the two fields. All four women's games ended in draws, with Aleksandra Goryachkina coming closest to a win against Kateryna Lagno. In the men's tournament, only one of four games was drawn. Fabiano Caruana defeated rating favorite Hikaru Nakamura, while 20-year-olds Javokhir Sindarov and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu picked up wins over Andrey Esipenko and Anish Giri respectively. With 13 rounds still ahead, the race for the World Championship challenge is wide open. 🏆

In a recent article, they highlighted growing concerns among Germans about a potential pension gap and shared insights from Dominik Mayr, manager at Freedom24, on how structured investing strategies can help address this challenge. Based on an analysis by Freedom24, even those who start investing later in life can still build meaningful long term savings. “Our focus is on the S&P 500 stock index,” explains Dominik Mayr, manager at Freedom24. “This index comprises the 500 leading publicly traded US companies, such as Amazon and Apple.” The example outlined in the article shows that investing €500 per month from age 50 could result in assets of around €190,000 by age 65, assuming historical market returns develop in a similar way. 📈 🔗 Read more on Nord24

In an interview with Oninvest, Oleksandr Buiukli, Head of Freedom24 Bulgaria, which operates as a tied agent of Freedom Finance Europe Ltd., shared his perspective on how the country’s transition to the euro is influencing investor sentiment and market dynamics. The topic is particularly relevant as Bulgaria’s euro adoption has become one of the key drivers of local stock market growth in early 2026, exposing the broader economic implications of deeper integration into the European financial system. In January, following the switch from the lev to the euro, the number of new foreign investors on the exchange increased by 64% year on year, while the Bulgarian Stock Exchange’s main index, SOFIX, rose by almost 7%. Discussing the structural nature of this shift, he noted that “Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro represents a fundamental shift in its economic logic.” He explained that the transition is not about short-term stimulus but about building a stronger institutional framework that supports long-term investment decisions. According to Buiukli, the single currency removes exchange rate risk and improves access to financing, while also increasing the importance of structural reforms for sustainable growth. He also highlighted the changing perception of the country among global investors, stating that “The euro is changing everything: investors see the country as part of a larger European pie, the risk premium is falling, and stock prices are rising even without excess corporate profits.” At the same time, he emphasized that while capital inflows and market activity have accelerated, political uncertainty and global risk factors remain important considerations for investors. 🔗 Read more on Oninvest

In an expert commentary for Forbes Portugal, João Lampreia, Market Specialist at Freedom24, explores how AI could influence future monetary policy decisions and reshape market dynamics. The discussion focuses on the potential nomination of Kevin Warsh to lead the Federal Reserve and the idea that productivity gains driven by AI could allow for lower interest rates without triggering inflation. This perspective matters for investors as it highlights how structural technological shifts may affect both equity and fixed income markets. 📊 João notes that a new intellectual framework may be emerging around monetary policy, where supply-side improvements become central. As he explains, "productivity growth through AI as a deflationary shield, allowing for lower interest rates without the risk of overheating." He also highlights the key uncertainty surrounding this scenario by referring to the Solow paradox. As he notes, "We see computers everywhere except in productivity statistics." This means that if the expected productivity gains from AI do not materialise quickly enough, monetary easing could lead to renewed inflationary pressures. In such a case, investors may face higher market volatility and an increased need to balance growth exposure with defensive assets over the medium term. 🔗 Read more on Forbes Portugal
