The programme combines online Storytelling Labs on how narratives shape the digital space with in-person Action Labs focused on designing community, communications and civic campaigns. Participation is free; advance registration is required. ➨ n-ost invites journalists from across Europe to n-counter: Reclaiming Reality, a two-day conference in Berlin on 2–3 October 2026 exploring how political polarisation, algorithms, disinformation and changing media environments are reshaping journalism and democracy. The programme brings together journalists and media experts from Germany and Central and Eastern Europe for newsroom discussions on topics including far-right narratives, platform power, cross-border collaboration, climate reporting and community-driven journalism. The conference will take place at Forum Factory in Berlin, with satellite sessions hosted by several local newsrooms. Registration here. ➨ The Eastern Academic Alliance, a project of akno e.V., has opened a call for interdisciplinary teams of education experts, teachers, educational initiatives and media professionals to develop digital teaching materials for Russian-speaking secondary school students. The call supports alternative curricula and ready-to-use digital materials in subjects particularly affected by ideological pressure. The aim is to create fully digital educational programmes that strengthen critical, evidence-based learning. Selected projects will receive €7,000. Apply by 30 September 2026. ➨ SCIENCE AT RISK invites applications for the “Writing and Research Skills” laboratory. The five-session programme is aimed primarily at early-career researchers and students interested in strengthening their academic writing skills and pursuing an international academic career. Participants will work with scholarly literature and research tools, learn how to identify and engage relevant academic audiences. Individual consultations on participants’ writing will also be available. The laboratory will take place on 1, 15 and 29 October, and 12 and 26 November. The workshop will be held in English. ➨ Tamarack Institute invites community changemakers, nonprofit leaders and others working on complex social challenges to the online workshop “Seeing the System: Tools for Understanding Complex Community Challenges” on 27 October 2026. The session will introduce practical systems-thinking tools for identifying patterns, mapping relationships and structures, exploring root causes and finding potential leverage points for change. Another week, another #CivilSocietyDigest — we’ve collected new opportunities in civil society, human rights and research. ➨ People Powered has opened applications for the Democracy Stories Lab — a global call for creative visual stories about the future of democracy. Individual creators and small teams worldwide can submit up to two finished pieces, including short videos or illustrations, exploring themes such as voice, fairness, freedom, collective decision-making and democratic participation. Four winners will receive $1,000 each, while five honorable mentions will receive $500 each. Apply by 14 September 2026. ➨ The Gender and Transformation in Central-Eastern Europe and Eurasia Workshop invites participants to a talk by political theorist and historian Anastasia Kalk on “From Communes to Kommunalizatsiya: Soviet Feminist Theory of Family Socialization.” The session will explore Soviet feminist approaches to family abolition. Apply by 6 September 2026. ➨ The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is looking for a full-time Program Coordinator for Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The role leads CPJ’s research, advocacy and regional coordination on press freedom issues, with a particular focus on Russia and Eastern Europe. The programme supports people worldwide who face threats or persecution because of their work or civic engagement and do not currently have a safe place to stay. Applications are submitted jointly by the artist or cultural practitioner and a host organisation in Germany, such as a cultural institution, collective or civil society organisation. Applications for funding in Germany are open until 11 September 2026. ➨ The Eastern Partnership Civil Society Facility has opened applications for Fellowships Without Borders 2026, supporting civic activists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine whose work, communities or learning extend across borders. Fellows can develop projects in Eastern Partnership countries, EU Member States, or EU Candidate Countries, including study visits, research, advocacy, community initiatives, civic tech projects, and cross-border cooperation. Selected participants will receive approximately €5,000. Apply by 11 September. ➨ PILnet, together with Orrick, A&O Shearman, UNHCR, and Refugee Congress, is organising the second US Refugee Rights Pro Bono Workshop on 10 September. The online session is aimed at refugee-led organisations and nonprofits working with refugees, forcibly displaced people, and stateless communities in the United States. Participants will learn how to access pro bono legal support, build effective partnerships with law firms, navigate common challenges, and develop strong project proposals. Fresh issue of #CivilSocietyDigest has landed — check it out for fresh opps in civil society and human rights! ➨ The Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany has opened a new call under its programme “Expanding Cooperation with Civil Society in the Eastern Partnership Countries and Russia.” The programme supports civil society cooperation projects involving at least one organisation from Germany and one partner from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine or Russia; organisations operating in temporary exile in the region may also participate. Projects can focus on areas including independent media and resilience to disinformation, human rights and democratic values, democratic transformation, participation of marginalised groups and regional dialogue. Project outlines can be submitted in English or German from 7 August to 15 September 2026. ➨ The Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) invites journalists, media freedom organisations and legal experts to register for the MFRR Summit 2026, taking place in Brussels on 12 October. The programme will address some of the most pressing challenges to media freedom in Europe, including the financial sustainability of journalism, digital threats, legal harassment, foreign interference. Apply here. ➨ OVD-Info* is looking for a Director to lead the operational management of its team and support the long-term sustainability of the independent human rights media project. Responsibilities include developing internal processes, overseeing financial sustainability, crisis management, strategic decision-making and representing the organisation externally with partners. Candidates should be based outside Russia. English at B2 level or higher is required. The role is full-time and remote, with a competitive NGO-sector salary and relocation support if needed. Apply by 23 August 2026. *OVD-Info has been designated an ‘extremist organisation’ by the Russian authorities. ➨ The European Commission has opened the CERV-2026-DAPHNE call, with €21 million available for projects addressing gender-based violence and violence against children. The call is particularly relevant for civil society organisations, women’s rights and child protection networks, public authorities and consortium partners working on prevention, victim support and systemic change. Priority areas include regranting and capacity-building for grassroots CSOs, protection and support for victims and survivors, prevention of gender-based violence, implementation of the Violence Against Women Directive and Istanbul Convention and stronger integrated child protection systems.
