Ireland's wildfire risk is exposing what some experts say are outdated environmental laws. Following a major wildfire in County Tipperary, conservationists are urging the government to modernise 30-year-old rules on land burning, arguing that current penalties are too weak to deter illegal fires as climate change makes wildfires more frequent and severe. Environmental specialists also warn that degraded peatlands, large single-species forests and prolonged drought are increasing the danger, while the loss of flowers and water is putting additional pressure on bees and other pollinating insects. For Ireland, preventing the next wildfire may depend as much on changing land management as on fighting the flames.

EU fisheries ministers have gathered in Cork for a two-day meeting to discuss how fishing and aquaculture can become more sustainable while ensuring both sectors remain competitive for future generations. The talks, hosted under Ireland's EU Council presidency, also bring together senior EU officials and representatives from every member state to help shape the bloc's long-term maritime strategy. For Ireland, welcoming Europe's fisheries leaders is a reminder of how closely its coastal communities are tied to the future of the sea.

Dublin's 18th-century Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park has reopened to visitors after more than two years of restoration, with experts stabilising over 430 metres of original walls, rebuilding the long-lost Dorset Gate and restoring key military structures using traditional conservation techniques. The fort, originally built between 1734 and 1736 as a secure gunpowder store and later linked to the 1916 Easter Rising, can now be explored on guided tours as work continues in future phases. Sometimes the best way to protect the past is to let people walk through it again.

Mayo stunned Kerry to win the 2026 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, lifting the Sam Maguire Cup at last and ending one of sport's longest losing streaks in major finals. For generations of supporters, this was far more than a trophy-it was the reward for decades of hope, near misses and unwavering loyalty, while many also paused to remember the family members and friends who never lived to see the day. Sometimes the sweetest victory isn't just about beating an opponent-it's finally making peace with history.

The government has appointed Gráinne Griffin and Denis Carrigan as the country's first Financial Literacy Ambassadors, tasking them with helping people better manage their money while supporting Ireland's National Financial Literacy Strategy. Their work will also promote financial education around the planned Investment Account, due to launch in 2027, as the government seeks to improve long-term financial wellbeing across the country. Sometimes the most valuable investment isn't in the market-it's understanding your own money first.

Researchers in County Galway have uncovered two different 6,000-year-old megalithic tombs standing side by side-the only known site of its kind in Ireland-offering rare insight into how the island's earliest farming communities buried their dead and carried out rituals. Excavations also revealed an amethyst pendant unlike anything previously found at a similar Irish site, along with stone tools, pottery and cremated human remains. Sometimes history's greatest discoveries aren't hidden underground-they're waiting just a few metres from where we were already looking.

Penneys has unveiled its newly expanded and fully refurbished Dooradoyle store in Limerick after a €7 million investment, nearly doubling the shop's size from 13,400 to 24,600 square feet and creating around 30 new jobs, bringing total staff to 135. The project is part of the retailer's wider €250 million investment plan for Ireland, which also includes a €75 million distribution centre in Newbridge set to open later this year. Sometimes giving shoppers more space is also a way of investing in an entire community.

Ireland is preparing a new National Parks Bill that would give park rangers the power to issue on-the-spot fines-potentially up to €1,000-for reckless behaviour such as using disposable grills during wildfire warnings, replacing a system where rangers can currently do little more than confiscate equipment. The government says the law will create the country's first comprehensive legal framework for managing, protecting and restoring national parks, bringing Ireland closer to international best practice after recent fires damaged wildlife habitats in Killarney National Park. Sometimes protecting nature starts not with planting trees, but with making people think twice before lighting a fire.

A pair of white-tailed eagles in County Kerry has successfully raised chicks for the fifth consecutive year, as conservationists say the country's wild population has now grown to around 150 birds-enough to become self-sustaining. The recovery follows a reintroduction program launched in 2007, although illegal poisoning and other human-related threats remain the biggest danger to the species. Sometimes the strongest sign that conservation is working is hearing young wings take flight again.
