Knowing whether you're talking to a person or AI is becoming a legal right in Ireland and across the EU. New rules taking effect today require companies to label AI-generated content such as deepfakes and clearly tell customers when they are chatting with an AI instead of a human, with heavy fines for those who fail to comply. Ireland has also launched a new AI Office to enforce the rules, handle complaints and oversee the country's growing use of artificial intelligence. As AI becomes part of everyday life, knowing what's real matters more than ever.

Galway has launched a pilot programme at Silverstrand and Ballyloughane beaches, installing accessible beach mats that allow wheelchair users, people with limited mobility, older visitors and families with strollers to reach the sand more easily. Inspired by a successful project elsewhere in Ireland, the initiative will run through the end of August before officials decide whether to expand it into a long-term programme. Sometimes the smallest path leads to the biggest freedom.

Tens of thousands of spectators are expected at the 19th Bray Air Display, where world-class aerobatic teams, military parachutists, wing walkers and historic aircraft will take to the air, while a dedicated Future of Flight zone lets visitors experience drone flying through virtual reality and live demonstrations. With road closures and limited parking in place, organizers are urging people to arrive by public transport, bicycle or on foot. Sometimes the best seat at an airshow starts with leaving the car behind.

Ireland's University Hospital Limerick has urged people with non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries to consider GPs, pharmacies and urgent injury units after its emergency department recorded the country's highest patient volume this year, with more than 55,400 visits and 992 patients arriving in just the last three days. The hospital says the emergency department remains fully open and the most critical cases are being treated first, but patients with less serious conditions should expect longer waits. Sometimes the fastest way to get medical help is not the busiest door.

The EPA wants all private drinking water sources to be legally registered with local authorities and regularly monitored, saying too many systems remain outside official oversight despite serving schools, care homes, hotels, campsites and other public facilities. Its latest report found that nearly 20,000 people received water exceeding legal limits for trihalomethanes in 2025, almost 2,000 were supplied by systems that failed E. coli standards, and more than 40% of supplies failing E. coli tests had also failed the year before. Clean water is easy to take for granted-until nobody can say for certain that it's safe.

Ireland is hosting an EU presidency conference bringing together more than 250 delegates from 24 member states, including 80 children and young people, to discuss issues such as age limits for social media and giving young people a stronger voice in policymaking. The event comes as the European Commission prepares to present proposals on children's access to social media after the summer, while Ireland continues to back EU-wide rules rather than national restrictions. When policies affect the next generation, it makes sense to let them join the conversation.

The Land Development Agency currently has 6,500 homes under construction across 20 projects, with most properties offered as cost-rental housing at least 25% below market rates, while its wider pipeline has grown to nearly 30,000 homes. Officials say faster planning decisions, fewer legal challenges and lower construction costs are helping accelerate building, with new projects expanding beyond Dublin to cities including Cork, Limerick and Galway. For a country facing a housing shortage, the biggest blueprint is no longer on paper-it's already taking shape.

A new report from the Irish College of General Practitioners warns of severe shortages in rural communities, fast-growing suburbs and some disadvantaged urban areas, estimating that the country needs more than 6,000 GPs despite having only around 4,900 at the end of last year. Doctors say rapid population growth, an ageing population and an ageing medical workforce are stretching primary care beyond its limits, forcing some rural patients to wait weeks for appointments or turn to emergency departments instead. When healthcare can't keep pace with where people live, even a routine check-up can become a long journey.

Home bakers from across the country competed in the Irish Countrywomen's Association national brown bread final in County Louth, with three finalists earning a place at the live bake-off during the National Ploughing Championships in September. Judges praised the exceptionally high standard of this year's entries, highlighting well-baked loaves with great texture, flavour and an even crust, while the winner will take home a €5,000 prize and a NEFF oven. Sometimes the toughest competition isn't in a stadium-it's deciding which loaf deserves to be called Ireland's best.
