The messenger market is starting to move again. If everything used to revolve around Telegram and WhatsApp, then in 2026 a new player appears — XChat from Elon Musk.
The launch is scheduled for April 17, 2026, and there is already a lot of buzz around it. Musk promises not just another chat, but a full-fledged alternative to existing messengers: with end-to-end encryption, no ads, file sharing, calls, and built-in AI via Grok.
The main message is simple — to create a messenger that can be trusted. And this is a direct move into WhatsApp’s territory and partially Telegram’s.
But the main question remains open: will XChat really be able to compete with Telegram — or is it just another hype?
What is XChat and when will it be released
XChat is a separate messaging application from Elon Musk’s company X. It is not just an updated DM feature inside the X social network, but a standalone messenger. To use it, you need an X account, but the call/chat itself will work without linking to a phone. The release of XChat for iPhone and iPad is officially scheduled for April 17, 2026. The Android version will appear later. At launch, the messenger will be available to all X users (registration through their account will be required) — after passing pre-publication in the App Store, XChat will automatically download on the release day.
Musk announced XChat back in mid-2025. He promised that the app would be built on Rust and “Bitcoin-style encryption,” with an entirely new security architecture. In October 2025, Musk clarified that XChat “uses an encryption system based on direct exchange between users, similar to Bitcoin.” According to him, the messenger will not collect data about user conversations and pass it to advertisers, “Grok neural network is also planned to be integrated into chats.”
Main features of XChat
The XChat app promises a set of features positioned as competitive compared to Telegram and WhatsApp:
- End-to-end encryption (E2E). All messages are encrypted “on the client side” — even X itself will not be able to read them. Musk emphasized that this is “very reliable encryption” (Rust + “Bitcoin-style”), although cryptographers noted the inaccuracy of the wording.
- No ads and no tracking. Musk claims that XChat will have no ads and no user tracking. According to Apple, the app will not analyze the content of conversations — only metadata for feature operation. However, a privacy analysis in the App Store showed that XChat may collect geolocation, contacts, search history, and device identifiers. This contradicts the stated focus on maximum privacy, and experts have already taken note.
- Voice and video calls. Calls via XChat will work without specifying a phone number. An X account is sufficient. This is an advantage over WhatsApp, which requires a number.
- File sharing. Sending any files is supported: from photos/videos to large documents.
- Screenshot protection and timer. In private (secret) chats, screenshot blocking can be enabled. Messages can disappear on a timer (minimum — 5 minutes after reading).
- Editing and deleting. The user will be able to edit already sent messages or delete them “for everyone,” as in Telegram and WhatsApp.
- Group chats. Group conversations of up to 481 participants will be available — this is less than Telegram (which supports hundreds of thousands of participants), but roughly comparable to WhatsApp’s rating (~1024 participants).
- Grok integration. Unlike classic messengers, XChat will directly offer the ability to call the Grok AI assistant during a conversation. For example, the user will be able to get answers or content generation from Grok without leaving the chat.
In addition, XChat highlights among its advantages the ability to log in only with an X account and without a phone number, which once again distinguishes it from WhatsApp. The app is written in Rust, which should ensure high speed and memory safety. According to Musk, “at X we have completely rebuilt the entire messaging system” — XChat is not just an updated DM, but a new product.

No ads and privacy
Musk emphasizes privacy: as he promises, XChat will completely exclude ads and tracking of conversations. The Apple description states this directly: “Communicate in a private focused space… No ads. No tracking. Full end-to-end encryption.” Essentially, Musk is trying to position XChat as the “least unprotected system” (his joking expression for “maximum protected”) compared to competitors.
However, questions arose immediately after the announcement. After studying the privacy policy, users noticed that XChat may request access to geolocation, contacts, search history, and Apple ID identifier. According to experts, this looks like a contradiction: the platform claims privacy but at the same time collects metadata (probably for feature operation). So far, no independent audit of XChat cryptography has been conducted, so all security guarantees are only on words and trust in Musk’s brand.
Also, investigations have appeared online: X users found that Apple in the App Store indicates the need to link to many personal data. Therefore, many have already accused Musk’s team of “deception” — supposedly there are no ads, but the privacy policy whispers the opposite. Musk challenges WhatsApp (and Telegram)
The launch of XChat is part of Musk’s broader strategy to turn X into a “super app” like China’s WeChat. Against this background, he never tires of criticizing competitors. In early April 2026, Musk posted sharp words against WhatsApp on X: “You can’t trust WhatsApp.” This was related to a lawsuit against WhatsApp in the US: plaintiffs accuse Meta of substituting the promised encryption and transferring private messages to third parties. Musk reiterated that “Meta cannot be trusted.”
Telegram founder Pavel Durov also joined the criticism of WhatsApp. He called WhatsApp’s stated encryption “possibly the biggest consumer deception in history,” emphasizing that Telegram has never done anything like that. At the same time, Durov positively assesses the appearance of XChat. According to him, competition between messengers is needed, and the emergence of new “secure” apps will only expand user choice (allowing them to “filter out what they don’t like,” as he has said repeatedly in publications). As for Telegram, there has been no direct response from Pavel Durov to the XChat announcement yet. But obviously, the two largest messengers with Russian roots (Telegram and Roskomnadzor-approved Max) are now closely monitoring the release of the new competitor. At least in the public sphere, Durov only stated that increased competition will only benefit users.

- More choice. The new XChat messenger will give users an alternative, especially those already active on X. If you have an X account, moving to XChat will be simple: the app will not require a phone number, and communication goes through the familiar ecosystem. - Privacy check. Musk claims maximum security, but it needs to be confirmed in practice. If you choose XChat for secret communication, keep in mind: independent audits have not been conducted yet. For now, the advice is — “don’t store in the messenger what you are not ready to share”: do not rely on promises while the “musk factor” works.
- Caution with data. Despite the promise of “no tracking,” remember: XChat may request access to geolocation, contacts, etc. (as indicated in Apple’s policy). If it is important to you what data is collected, wait for clarifications from Musk/X.
