A new haircut can change your look-but this project is helping teenagers change their future. Dublin's Hair Together teaches young people hairdressing and barbering while also building their confidence through wellbeing and personal development programmes, giving them a better chance of finding work. Founded by Eileen McHugh after she overcame addiction herself, the initiative is designed to help local teenagers believe in themselves and follow their career goals. Sometimes the most valuable thing a salon gives you isn't a haircut-it's a fresh start.

One bet is easy to place-but much harder to walk away from. Ireland has opened a new outpatient addiction service in Athlone to meet growing demand from people struggling with gambling, especially in the west of the country, where many previously faced long trips to Dublin for treatment. Specialists warn gambling addiction carries one of the highest death rates among addictive disorders, while the rise of online casinos, crypto betting and smartphone apps is making recovery even harder. As gambling moves into everyone's pocket, Ireland is racing to make sure help is just as easy to find.

A pay rise could be on the way for Ireland’s lowest-paid workers. The Low Pay Commission is expected to recommend a 5.6% increase in the national minimum wage, lifting it from €14.15 to €14.94 an hour if the government signs off on the proposal. Any change would be announced with the national budget and take effect from January 1, 2027, continuing a run of annual minimum wage increases. It’s not a done deal yet, but the government has usually followed the commission’s advice, making this recommendation more than just a number on paper.

The debate over electric scooters is picking up speed, but many in Ireland say hitting the brakes completely isn't the answer. After the prime minister signaled support for a possible nationwide ban, transport advocates and politicians argued that stricter enforcement of existing rules would be far more effective than outlawing the vehicles altogether. They are instead calling for measures such as registration, licensing, insurance and tougher policing to target dangerous riders without penalizing responsible commuters. Sometimes the real problem isn’t the scooter-it’s how people choose to use it.

Even airlines have to tighten their seatbelts sometimes. Aer Lingus is planning to cut up to 500 jobs as part of a cost-saving overhaul that will reduce its flight capacity by 6% and scale back several routes between late 2026 and summer 2027, including services to Denver, Minneapolis and Las Vegas. The airline says tougher competition, higher fuel costs and a €103 million first-quarter loss have made the changes unavoidable, while affected passengers are being offered rebooking or refunds. It’s a sharp reminder that in aviation, even full planes don’t always guarantee a smooth financial landing.

Sometimes a championship means far more than what happens on the field. As Galway prepares for Sunday's All-Ireland hurling final, villages across the county are buzzing with excitement as hundreds of children pack summer training camps, inspired by local stars who grew up on the same pitches and now wear the county jersey. Coaches, families and former players say the team's success is already fueling the next generation, proving that in Ireland, hurling is as much about community as competition. If Galway lifts the Liam MacCarthy Cup, they won't just win a title-they'll give an entire county another reason to dream.

Artificial intelligence is no longer just a technology story-it's quickly becoming a trade story too. In Ireland, business group Ibec expects AI-related trade to double within the next five years as investment in ICT equipment and software surges and the country strengthens its role as a key link in global AI supply chains. At the same time, economists say the long-term impact of AI on jobs is still uncertain, while rising energy costs and global tensions have pushed inflation forecasts higher. It’s a reminder that the AI boom may create huge opportunities, but it won’t shield economies from old-fashioned geopolitical shocks.

The right companion can change a life more than any piece of technology. In Ireland, organizations that train assistance dogs are calling for stronger government support and common national standards, while officials highlighted how these dogs help people with autism and disabilities gain confidence, independence, and a better quality of life. One family shared that their assistance dog transformed everyday routines, making simple walks and outings possible again while providing comfort during difficult moments. It’s a reminder that some of the most powerful support doesn’t come from a machine-it arrives on four paws.

Sometimes a sport travels farther than anyone expects. More than 2,000 players and coaches from over 30 countries have gathered in Waterford, Ireland, for the Gaelic Games World Games, where many competitors discovered the sport far from Irish shores. From Texas to Paraguay and Zambia, participants say the tournament is about much more than winning-it's a chance to build friendships and experience Irish culture firsthand. It turns out you don't have to be born in Ireland to fall in love with one of its oldest traditions.
