This video is part of online series: Remembering Julian Bream. The New York Guitar Festival invited some of our favorite artists to reflect on the life and musical legacy of the Grammy Award-winning classical guitarist and lutenist Julian Bream. On the video William Kanengiser performs 5 Impromptus by English composer Richard Rodney Bennet. This piece was composed in 1968 and dedicated to Julian Bream. The Impromptus grew out of a request by Julian Bream for a guitar concerto. Bennett, having never written for the guitar before, did not feel comfortable beginning with a large, multi- movement work. He began the Impromptus as an exercise to teach himself how to write well for the instrument. On writing for the guitar Bennett has said: «There was no way I was going to write a concerto for Julian right off, because I didn’t know enough about how the guitar worked...[The Impromptus] were a little exercise towards writing a concerto.
